Peru Packing List
This is what I am planning on bringing with me as we trek through Peru! If you have any questions about gear or would like some other recommendations, shoot me a message and I am more than happy to help you sort things out.
By using these links, I receive a small kickback at no extra cost to you. :)
The gear
Wool socks: Darn Tough Hiker Socks
Hands down the most comfy hiking socks! I will be bringing 4 pairs and will most likely keep one clean pair to sleep in.
Water bottle: 1L Nalgene OR a 1L/1.5L Hyrdapack
Love both of these! But the Hydrapack is a lot lighter and nicer to carry. Not entirely sure which one I will bring yet!
Warm gloves: REI Fleece Gloves
Lightweight but very warm gloves! Love these. Never had any issues with them.
Fav hat. It goes everywhere with me!
Sunnies: Smith Bobcat Chroma Pop Sunnies
Portable power bank: Biolite charge 80pd OR Goal Zero Venture 75
I’ve had a great experience with both of these power banks!
Dry bags: Sea to Summit Dry Bags
I’ve had these hiking boots for the past 2 years and have worn them on a handful of backpacking trips! They are waterproof and have held up in wet conditions but they also don’t get too hot. Personally, I love them. But you will want to break them in.
Hiking boots: La Sportiva Ultra Raptors
Always been a Teva girly. The Hurricanes are great b/c of the extra tread compared to the Teva Originals! Chacos also work too but Teva is my personal favorite.
Water shoes: Teva Hurricane XLT 2’s
Backpack: Osprey Mira 22L + 3L water bladder
Super comfy pack that I think will be perfect for the trek. 22L is a great size to be able to carry what you need for the day! I will have my cameras with me as well and I know everything fits well in this pack with snacks + a few extra layers.
Kari Traa is my personal favorite but I also love Smartwool! Will wear these when it gets super chilly but I typically keep them for the evening/sleeping.
The Otero fleece is more lightweight but it’s still a great layer. Especially for hiking! BUT if you run on the colder side, the Abrazo is a great option. At the moment I am not sure which one I will bring. Most likely leaning towards the Otero vs. the Abrazo.
Sun shirt: Patagonia Capilene Sun Hoodie
A sun hoodie is always something I take with me on backpacking trips. It packs down small and it’s usually my favorite layer for hiking in! I’ve had this Patagonia sun hoodie for the past 5+ years and it’s still kicking it.
Puffy jacket: Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoodie
I LOVE this puffer jacket. It is incredibly warm and it packs down surprisingly small. I wear an XS b/c it does run pretty large. I’ve never regretted bringing this jacket on any trips! It is my fav.
I have had this rain jacket for the past 5 years and it is still going strong. It is pricey, but in my opinion it is totally worth the investment if you can swing it. I would also recommend to look on Depop or Poshmark for a used jacket! You can usually find them cheaper there.
Rain jacket: Arc’teryx Beta LT Rain Jacket
Wore these on our cycling trip around Iceland and our trip to Norway and had no issues. I love them, and didn't have any issues with being soaking wet after a downpour!
Rain pants: REI Trailmade Rain Pants
Merino Wool t-shirt: Smartwool t-shirt
Typically will layer this over a tank top if it isn’t too chilly and then throw on the fleece over this if I get colder. Merino wool is key here! + I love the colors they have.
Easily my most favorite pair of hiking pants I’ve ever owned. Stretchy, comfy, adjustable waist, AND they are actually long enough on me. I will also probably bring a pair of Patagonia Baggies!
Bought these for our bike trip to Iceland, and suddenly I wear them for everything. They stay on, don’t hurt my face, and I feel really cool lol. Good things all around.
I will probably bring 1 tank and 1 sports bra on the trek with me. I wear them underneath everything and both of these tanks don’t dig into my shoulders weird.
Tank Top: Rachel Pohl Art Eco Crop OR Free People Tank
Headlamp: Any headlamp will do! Make sure to bring extra batteries!
Love these for keeping things organized in my pack. Also nice for separating dry/wet clothes! They come in handy more than not.
Not necessary for this trip in any means, but I’ve found it super helpful for training and overall fitness! It also has some great navigation features. I will definitely be wearing it in Peru.
My watch: Garmin Fenix 7s
In terms of clothing and gear, I would say that is it! Aside from the above, I will also be bringing bug wipes, sunscreen, body wipes, a beanie, very basic toiletries, my camera gear and lots of 35mm film.
If you have any questions about gear or want some more recs on sizing / fit, send me a message and we can sort it out!
I may or may not add more to this list as we get closer to the trip, but the above covers all the important stuff in terms of gear.
